It's always nice to see a drawing by Goya. In one of my first articles, I discussed three drawings typical of the sharp social criticism of the master. The artwork of today (or more accurately of tomorrow, because the sale takes place on January 28) is more peaceful.
Goya enjoyed to draw, to the point of setting up some private albums. At some time between 1812 and 1820, he prepared a sequence in sepia showing hunters and their dogs and included it in one of these albums.
Our huntsman is at rest, the gun down, looking straight to the artist. Details, like the shadow of the hat on his forehead, demonstrate the mastery of the artist. The dog is standing, leaning forward, waiting for orders. The soil and landscape are only outlined, but it did not take more.
This beautiful sheet of 20 x 14 cm, for sale by Sotheby's in New York, is estimated 600 K $.
