Sorolla loved the beach scenes of his hometown of Valencia.
In 2003, Sotheby's sold at £ 3.7 million premium included La hora del baño, an oil on canvas 84 x 119 cm painted in 1904. The colors are bright, as always with this painter, but the topic, which includes a naiad, children, a bull, a boat, is difficult to decode.
I prefer the work more intimate, more simple, that Sotheby's presents in London on June 3.
Entitled Niña entrando en el baño, painted in 1915, it shows a young woman ready to enter the sea, dressed in a long shirt fashionable in the seaside at that time. The dynamic movement assesses that Sorolla is sensitive to the best art trends of his time.
Although its dimensions, 86 x 106 cm, are comparable to those of the painting sold in 2003, the estimated 1.7 million £ seems high.
