Hi there! We just joined Pierre Tavlitski's Art Auction Knowledge social network.
http://artnings.ning.com Pierre is a member here on Area Light and has a lot of excellent thoughts about how to use Ning social networks. His site is a world art auction review we find fascinating.
In his introduction, he points out the price of art at auction that is exceptional in it category serves to help measure the relevant place that art has in civilization. Therefore, locating art at auction, analyzing and communicating about it together, is a cultural act and an effective means for each of us to open our minds to the fields we do not know. This is terrific! Pierre brings an eloquent sophistication to his commentary but still manages to keep it simplified to the basic point of what he is doing.
The network is certainly an art community for artists who can appreciate the deeper implications of work beyond aesthetic values alone. There are a variety of self-organized art groups represented from different themes that canvass a broad range of categories from ancient to modern, furniture to glass, and many more. Pierre performs a weekly exploration of art at auction, helps introduce and support discussions pertaining to works coming up for auction, and then posts results after the fact. Look into some of the forum discussions and you will certainly find an intellectual survey of art and a relevance to society you might normally only find on the Discovery or History Channel. Perhaps the added value in this is the connectivity to the current art movements, the cascading refinement of history, art, and society real-time, and the possibility of being involved directly or indirectly through participation in this well organized social network.
Congratulations to Pierre on this terrific concept! Pierre's generous open environment is a lead in to a far broader world of art related social networks. Check out his profile page where he gladly shares links to other networks created by his members. We sure will and we plan to explore these with excitement. Pierre is also active with several discussions here on Area Light about social networking on Ning. Check out our group Area Light Home or join him for an ongoing discussion featuring him on Coffee With The Oracle.

I went back to your page here, and I viewed my comment of Nov 16. This comment is obsolete because I removed the text box referred therein. However my intent of thanking you for your analyses of this network is still valid.
I feature your profile. At the end of the year I will include an additional page on the network to introduce featured members and explain why they are featured. This is one of some changes I have in mind for improving this network.
All the best
Pierre
I linked your page in a new text box on main page, bottom of right column.
Have a nice Sunday
Pierre
I just "discovered" your comment to yourself here.
Against all the press I do not believe that there is an actual link between the current financial crisis and art price. Some top artworks (a self portrait of Bacon at Christie's, as an example) were unsold because the seller wanted more than what it is worth. The effect of the crisis is that the high quality goods become rare, not that the prices really decrease.
Last year a van Gogh became unsold at Sotheby's for the same reason, with no financial crisis behind it.
Do not focus too much on estimates. They are an indicator before the sale, but also they are very often nothing else than the reserve price (minimum price defined by the seller after negotiation with the auction house).
I expect some discussions on such questions on the Forum here, in the category Auction World.
I invite you to start one of them, or more if you wish, of course. I do not start it myself because I prefer trying to remain neutral on such subjects.
All the best
Pierre
To note: comments regarding the well faring of art at auction reinforces the continuation of excellent art's increasing social and private values- regardless of the current world economic situation. In fact, some art prices exceeding estimates. Perhaps this despite or in spite of economic circumstances.
Welcome on this network. I add the Area Light badge on the main page, in the Friends' networks.
I invite you to use also your blog on this network. Latest blog posts are visible on the main page, and I feel that members here do not use this feature enough.
Concerning Area Light network :
I use to consider softwares as tools, not as procedures. The way I link my two networks everywhere in these pages, and the way I use Groups are typical of what can be done with the Ning basic features if we use them in an unconventional manner.
Finding the most efficient way for everybody (with a different solution for each network creator) is a challenge that is perfectly supported by the purpose of Area Light network.
Let us all enjoy Ning together.
Pierre
Nice to know that you are in NorCal. I favour the independence of Cal LOL! but not the secession of NorCal !!
