James Tissot between France and England

Sotheby's will meet some difficulties for selling at £ 1 million their star lot of the sale of Victorian and Edwardian Art of July 15 in London.

At number 54, it is an oil on canvas by James Tissot, French painter who had a studio in London and provided a link between the two countries at the time of the Impressionists. The attitudes of his characters are indeed thinking about Manet.

Our painting, rather medium-sized (51 x 34 cm) represents a young woman heavily dressed according to fashion of the time, passing a handkerchief on the front of a fireplace, trying not to dirty her clothes. Her attitude is rigid, and the incongruous dog at her feet adds nothing to the interests of the whole.

Sotheby's, always accurate in the sources, tells us that at its previous passage it was sold at Christie's in 2003. I found it was sold £ 1.5 million costs included, which corresponds to the price of the high estimate of today.

It is long ago that Tissot paintings did not sell at these prices, as an example two of them remained unsold at Sotheby's in New York in October 2006 on an estimate of $ 1.8 million each. The trend of Tissot is therefore toward the decline, it is unlikely that this painting succeeds to counter this trend.

For the time being, I am the only author writing in this network.
My end goal is that my inputs are superseded by yours on the subjects where your knowledge is better than mine.
It must be easy: as a generalist, I am specialist of nothing.
If I meet this goal then I shall "only" act as editor.
