Cap of Liberty for July 14

Today is July 14, National Day in France. Soldiers parading on the Avenue des Champs Elysees look so serious in wanting to show their modern equipment.

To find a little of the atmosphere of the Revolution, I invite you to cross the Channel. At Knightsbridge, on July 23, Bonhams offers an authentic French bonnet, number 273 of the sale.

Estimated 3 K£, it is blue, decorated with small flowers and two cockades and improved with a red pompom. Considered probably as a piece of art by one of its former owners, it is mounted on a board wrapped with tissue, which also holds a small handwritten paper announcing that a Mr McGibbon used it to escape Paris during the Revolution.

It would have been even more fun if it is shaped as a bonnet Phrygien, with the top of the cap going back to front, because this model was the true emblem of Liberty. This is not the case, no matter after all: it is a "bonnet de police" shaped as isosceles trapezoid, probably dating from the Convention (1792-1795).

I'm glad that I have not disturbed you for nothing. The bonnet was actually better than its estimate. It was sold at 8.6 K£ before fees.

For the time being, I am the only author writing in this network.
My end goal is that my inputs are superseded by yours on the subjects where your knowledge is better than mine.
It must be easy: as a generalist, I am specialist of nothing.
If I meet this goal then I shall "only" act as editor.
